Note from Dan, Sr.:
George wandered onto our property in Drake, CO in January of 2001. I met him for the first time getting out of my car at midnight while returning home from a sales trip. George was staring up at me through the darkness and I knew I was a dead man. After 30 seconds or so of wetting my pants, I realized that George was not growling or showing any signs of hostility. In fact, his tail was wagging and it was clear he was just looking for someone to pet him.
As it turned out George belonged to a neighbor on the other side of the hill who was disgusted with him because he was useless as a watch dog---he wouldn't growl, wouldn't bark in anger, wouldn't run after anything---he was just a kind soul in a body designed for wreaking havoc.
So we adopted George and spent five great years with him. Little kids rode him, punched him, and sat on him; crotchety cats swatted at him, bit him, and slept on him; he just accepted and tolerated whatever negativity humans or animals directed his way. But he was always anxious to hear a friendly voice or receive a pat on the head.
Our family grew closer to George than any animal we had ever encountered. He was loved as a family member and will always remain a joyful memory.
