Video Archive Clip 1997 (July) - Yaden, Daniel C. Jr. - Age 19 - BOOT CAMP TIME WARP: Danny's boot camp experience as he trained to become a United States Marine, with some color commentary from 1960s Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the movie "Full Metal Jacket" - India Company, 3rd Battalion, Platoon 3062 - Marine Corp Recruit Depot at Parris Island - Parris Island, SC - Mixed Relations Series (13 min 16 sec)
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman was played by real-life Staff Sergeant and Marine Corps drill instructor R. Lee Ermey (served from 1961-1972). Following "Full Metal Jacket" in 1987, Staff Sergeant Ermey was later promoted to the honorary rank of Gunnery Sergeant and to this day is know as "The Gunny." Most of his dialogue in the movie was ad-libbed because he was so familiar with the role of the drill instructor.
In speaking with Danny and many Marines from several generations, they all agree that the training sequences from the first 30 minutes of "Full Metal Jacket" are as accurate a depiction of the Marine Corps boot camp experience as you'll ever see.
